Special relativity rethinks space and time
Einstein used the relativity principle and the constant speed of light in vacuum to reconsider how inertial observers compare time, length and motion.
The story
Working in Bern, Einstein reconsidered simultaneity and the behavior of moving clocks and rulers. This milestone uses the paper’s publication year, rather than confusing its receipt date with publication. Lorentz, Poincaré and existing electrodynamics supplied important context. General relativity’s account of gravitation was a later development and should not be merged with the 1905 theory.
Connections and context
Questions about electromagnetism and motion challenged absolute time. Classical low-speed measurements remained useful approximations whose limits could now be stated more precisely.
