Reading preferences stay in this browser
The interactive atlas uses browser local storage to remember the selected story, era and region, playback speed, timeline mode, active panel and reading scroll positions. Language preferences are saved when you switch languages. The Web edition offers English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Spanish.
This information is used locally to restore your reading state. The application does not upload it to a user account or provide cross-device synchronization. There is no sign-in or account registration.
You can remove these preferences using your browser's site-data controls for civatlas.site. Clearing site data resets your reading position and choices. Blocking local storage still allows reading, but preferences may not survive a later visit.
An explicit language in the URL takes priority, followed by your saved manual choice. Without either, the interactive atlas matches the supported languages in your browser’s language list and uses English if none matches. Static reading pages always keep the language specified by their URL; browser preferences do not override it.
Loading the site sends web requests
Pages, history data, scripts, fonts and illustrations are served as site resources. As with other websites, the hosting infrastructure receives the information needed to deliver a request, such as an IP address, requested URL and browser request headers. The Web edition is hosted on Cloudflare Pages; its infrastructure may process request and security logs.
The application does not use advertising cookies or a third-party advertising script. It does not request your device location, microphone or camera. Browser caching may retain site resources to make later visits faster.
Anonymous visit statistics and your choice
CivAtlas uses PostHog in cookieless mode for page views and counts of successfully opened event details and reading articles. We send only the page path, referring website domain, interface language and a fixed event name. URL queries and fragments, story titles, search terms, reading positions, form content and files are excluded. Session recording, automatic click collection and person profiles are disabled.
PostHog receives connection information to deliver requests and generates a daily anonymous visitor estimate using a server-side hash. This is an estimate, not precise identification across days or websites. Local and preview domains, QA query parameters, Do Not Track, Global Privacy Control and your saved disable choice prevent collection. When statistics fail, reading still works.
You can disable collection in this browser. Only the choice is stored under 2358.analytics.disabled.v1; a previous civatlas.analytics.disabled.v1 disable choice is respected too. Clearing site data removes it. Disabling collection does not erase existing aggregate reports or prevent necessary hosting requests.

Links and advertising
History bibliographies display reference titles without external website links. Internal links open the atlas, reading pages or review notes.
No advertisements are currently enabled. If advertising is introduced, this notice must be updated to identify the provider, explain its cookies or data use, and provide the required consent or privacy choices before those services run. A future plan to use advertising does not mean it is active today.

Feedback you choose to share
Opening feedback loads an embedded form from Tally. The service receives the connection information needed to deliver it, together with the public page, project and story context shown in the dialog. This site excludes unrelated URL queries, fragments, search terms and local reading records from that context.
When you submit, Tally processes the fields you choose to fill in, including any optional contact address, in the project’s form account. Contact details are optional. This site does not request a name or account, does not publish responses, and does not upload local reading preferences as part of feedback. The service may process its own technical or security information; this is not a promise that every request is anonymous.
The interactive atlas may show a small feedback invitation after you have spent two minutes in the foreground and actively opened three different stories. Closing the invitation or opening feedback saves a 30-day reminder preference in this browser. Only its expiry time is stored; the stories counted for the invitation stay in memory for this visit and are not sent to Tally or analytics.
