The story

Around the end of the thirteenth century, Eastern Polynesian voyagers reached the islands of New Zealand, later known as Aotearoa. Using knowledge of stars, waves, and winds, they carried crops and established settlements, gradually forming Māori society. The precise years of arrival remain subject to revision through archaeological dating; the map uses approximately 1300 as an illustration. Settlement changed forests and animal populations, while people also had to adapt to an environment colder than the tropical islands.

Elsewhere in the world

These oceanic migrations occurred at roughly the same time as the expansion of Eurasian transport in the Mongol era, revealing independent yet equally complex networks of movement.
