The story

Fiji became independent on 10 October 1970 and joined the Commonwealth. British colonial rule had begun in 1874, and many Indian indentured labourers arrived between 1879 and 1916 to work in the sugar economy. Colonial rule left lasting demographic and social effects. Independence opened a new phase of sovereignty and public institutions, while questions of land, representation and opportunity remained. Later constitutional and political changes should not be projected backward onto the 1970 independence ceremony.

Elsewhere in the world

As many African and Asian states had already gained independence, nation-building continued in the Pacific. Decolonization followed different schedules across regions.
