The story

On January 1, 1959, Batista left Cuba after revolutionary forces led by Castro made military gains. In early January, Urrutia became provisional president, and the new government established its administrative center in Havana. This moment should not be described as the complete establishment of Cuba's socialist system: state institutions, land reform, and foreign relations continued to change after the revolution. The cited U.S. diplomatic memorandum from 1959 records the transfer of power and the process of recognizing the new government; its policy judgments reflect the position of the U.S. government at the time.

Elsewhere in the world

Compared with revolutions and decolonization elsewhere during this period, Cuba shows how a Caribbean country made choices involving domestic reform and international relations.
